Cyberdyne Power Suit Essay
Professional Responsibility – Societal Impacts
The purpose of this assignment is to assess your understanding of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context. The assignment supports the ABET outcome related to “impacts of engineering solutions,” EAC h for ME students and ETAC j for MET students.
ABET EAC (h): Students must demonstrate the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
ABET ETAC (j): Students must demonstrate a knowledge of the impact of engineering technology solutions in a societal and global context
Instructions
- Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy7ipDAyXtI and watch the video on the Cyberdyne power suit.
- Then predict some possible impacts (via very concise descriptions) of this engineering solution in a global,
economic, environmental, and societal context. For example, you might discuss the solution with respect to:
- impacts to society (potential users, and/or those benefiting/harmed from the solution)
- environmental/economic tradeoffs
- health and safety/economic tradeoffs
- issues related to globalization (such as movement of production facilities to other countries)
- etc.
- Write up your responses and submit a PDF of the file to Canvas. There is no min or max page limit, but the
burden is on you to convey your understanding.
Scoring
Each potential impact in your list is given a score in the range of 0 to 5:
a)
b)
c) d)
A response that is not an impact is given zero points.
- For example, a response that is a statement of a feature or capability of the technology is not an
impact.
- A response that identifies a design requirement of the new technology is not an impact.
A response is given one point if the response is an obvious or readily apparent potential impact of the new technology.
- Responses in this category could include impacts regarding safety, health, or the environment.
- Other readily apparent impacts would be changes for existing competing products, industries, or
individuals and groups directly involved with the new product.
Responses that are more insightful and identify less obvious impacts are given 2 or 3 points depending on the sophistication of the response.
Five points are given to what are described as second-order impacts.
In this situation, you foresee a secondary impact or an impact that results from another likely impact.
100% = 90% = 80% = 70% = 60% = 0% =
a score of 15 or more a score of 12-14
a score of 10-11
a score of 7-9
a score of 6
a score of less than 6
Example: to make an 80% on this assignment you would need to identify 10-11 obvious or readily apparent impacts of the solution. Any combination of less obvious impacts is acceptable provided the total score is 10-11.
